Have you ever realized how the answers we need are right there, but somehow out of reach?


A new salesperson is struggling to explain a product feature to customers. The information is contained in a useful slide possessed by a seasoned colleague who hasn't shared it, perhaps intentionally. He is on leave even as the salesperson struggles.

I recently came across an article on reverse mentoring that's no longer merely progressive HR vocabulary. It refers to a study claiming that businesses with structured reverse mentorship programmes reported a 96% retention rate among millennial mentors over three years.


It's fascinating how leadership dynamics change considerably in reverse mentoring—a real strategic lever for future-ready organisations.


I find it refreshing to see younger employees guiding senior leaders on emerging technologies, new tools, cultural shifts, and fresh ways of thinking.


I was 45 when I first experienced reverse mentoring. My beliefs were, in the truest sense, challenged. I was being reoriented by someone 20 years younger—a woman about 24 or 25 then, roughly my daughters' present age.


At that point in my career, restlessness was growing. I felt the need to reinvent myself. Maybe a change of direction would suffice. Or so I thought.


She taught me that reinvention was also about being less rigid about my long-held views.


Gradually, I became a sponge, porous to knowledge, whatever the source. Knowledge became everything surrounding it: how I listened, learned, adapted, made pitches, and spoke to myself.


The experience shaped how I raised my daughters. Instead of parenting them with the baggage of my experiences, I became a blank slate. I grew up with them.


I owe a lot to the younger generation for keeping the flame of connection and curiosity alive in me.


Cross Mentoring: The Complete Solution


But here's the bigger truth—mentoring shouldn't just flow in one direction, or even in reverse. Cross mentoring, where people across roles, levels, and functions learn from one another, answers these workplace challenges comprehensively. It curbs knowledge hoarding and nurtures a culture where rapid technological change becomes an opportunity rather than a threat.


In an era where artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and evolving consumer behaviours reshape industries overnight, organisations need every available perspective. Cross mentoring ensures knowledge doesn't get trapped in hierarchies or departments. It creates multiple pathways for information to flow, reducing the risk of critical insights being lost or delayed. Most importantly, it builds organisational resilience by ensuring learning and adaptation happen continuously at every level.
