Why it is so valuable

Lately, I have been thinking about how much we all can grow if we step outside our usual circles. Cross-mentoring is something I truly believe in, and I think that it has the potential to be a real game-changer for individuals as well as organizations. Think about it: we often gravitate towards mentors who share similar backgrounds, work in the same department, or have walked a similar career path. That would be great for getting specific advice, but what if we looked beyond our immediate circles?

𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬-𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬. A marketing professional, for example, might learn a thing or two about operations, while someone from finance could discover creative problem-solving from a design colleague. This is a two-way street where both parties learn, grow and build trust.

But let's take this a step further. Imagine a robust support system, an "executive partner on demand" approach, where leaders can tap into a network of expert mentors across diverse functions. This isn't just about individual growth; it's about navigating complex business landscapes with the benefit of multiple, informed viewpoints.

Why is this so valuable?

For one, cross-mentoring helps break silos between teams. It deepens your understanding of how different functions operate, enhances your problem-solving skills, and also strengthens cultural intelligence— the essential in today’s complex business landscape.

And the best part: 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞-𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐨. Some of the most valuable insights come from the most unexpected sources.

What are your thoughts on cross-mentoring? Have you tried it before? Share your experiences in the comments below – I'd love to hear from you!
